Biography:
Cahal has been a practising barrister in Australia for the past 16 years. He has a broad practice as a trial and appellate advocate. He has appeared in over 50 cases in the Federal Court; over 60 cases in the Federal Circuit Court as well as in the High Court and all Victorian State Courts.
He is a graduate of the Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland and completed his Bar exams in Belfast. He undertook further legal studies in Australia and read with Nicholas Green QC and the Honourable Justice Ginnane of the Supreme Court of Victoria. He has been led by Estcourt QC (now the Honourable Justice Estcourt of the Supreme Court of Tasmania) and Cavanough QC (now the Honourable Justice Cavanough of the Supreme Court of Victoria).
Prior to coming to the Bar, he was for over two years Associate to the then Honourable Justice Ryan of the Federal Court of Australia. He also teaches administrative law and federal court practice. He was for three years an elected member of the Victorian Bar Council. He has a home in Tasmania near Launceston and from July 2017 will also have chambers in Hobart.
